Palenque, Chiapas

A jewel in the middle of the jungle.

This is the most important pyramid in Palenque, on top is the Temple of the Inscriptions, several walls full of the writting of the Mayas, the Ghyps. There the story of the most famous king is told, the deeds of Pakal, whose tomb was later found at the center of the pyramid.
This are the "inscriptions" the glyphs that tells the story of the life of Pakal, it was a long story indeed, he died at the age of 82 more or less.

In the past it was allowed to visit the interior, here is the stairway leading to the base of the pyramid (52 meters down) and take a look a the 5 ton lid of the sarcophagus, today the whole pyramid is off-limits due to the high level of damages to the pyramid and to make some restorations.
This are other temples in the archaeological zone. Take a special note on the roof structures.

This is the palace in the right and the temple of the Inscriptions on the left, as seen from the Temple of the Cross.A model (in the museum) reconstructing the palace and it's intriguing tower.

The art of Palenque.

This is a 3-foot tall incense burner, magnificent, there were about 100 similar to this postioned around the Temple of the Cross.

Ruins are seen as stone and rubble, the Mayans used a lot of color in their sculptures and constructions.

This is a close-up of the feet, check the footware and the detail in the anklets, richly decorated.

This little statue is one foot tall, and the bird-head is removable.

Kinich, the Sun God, this statue is life-size, wonderful. This was a captive king that was prisoner of a king of Palenque, his name and kingdom is written in his leg.

Yaxchilan, Chiapas part 2

The jungle is still in good condition, you can see wildlife near you.

This Howler Monkey mother and it´s baby were just a few steps from us, and didn´t care about our presence at all.

Not the same with this poor crocodile, he was sunning placidly but when our boat got too close for comfort he just simply took a deep to flee away from us, he was too shy.

Monterrey, Hurricane Emily 2005

This was the bridge connecting the counties of Monterrey and Guadalupe.
Due to some movement caused by the strong current of the Santa Catarina river, a liquefied natural gas duct was ruptured and there was an explosion and fire. The displacement of the columns of the bridge rendered it too unsafe and it was decided the bridge needed demolition, this is the process.

Monterrey, near Parque Fundidora

This pickup truck is loaded with great cooking and lot of smiles and good humor.
Located between Karl's Jr and Popeye's, this is authentic fast food in great flavor and extremely affordable prices.

The food is fresh from the day. They ran out of everything daily before heading home.
On the top they display de the names of the "guisos" still available and they remove those signs as they finish the day's supply. No leftovers to root like in the big chain restaurants.

The friendly couple that runs the "show", she is a great cook. He is making some yummy avocado salsa. Ask them about any tip for enjoying Monterrey, they are always willing to help you, even with other food recomendations, they are not envious and will lovely head you in the right direction.

Huaraches

Huarache means Sandal.
The sandals used in Mexico are made of leather, both the sole and the straps.
In this case the item in the picture is Huarache de bisteck, which is a long very thick tortilla with beans in the middle. The name comes from the similarity with a sandal's sole, it´s the same shape, size and color. Funny!

After it's cooked some salsa is added, cream and white shreaded cheese.

They are easily stackable to have them ready for the rush hour when everybody is hungry and not willing to wait for them to be hand made and cooked.

Parque Fundidora

The metal plant was converted very succesfully into a park, all the scrap metal was removed and the results are beautiful.

The main building of the oven was opened on 1900 and closed 86 years later.

The Cart serials racetrack with the workshops in the back. The hill in the back is famous Cerro de la Silla (saddle chair Hill because the double tipped mountain reasembles a cowboy saddle chair), the emblem of the city of Monterrey.
